The Major Differences Between JFET and MOSFET


If you have never heard about JFET and MOSFET, then you will be interested to know that they are both transistors. The two are usually voltage-controlled, and they are generally used to strengthen weak signals. They can be used for both digital and analog signals. Even though the two devices are considered unipolar, they are made of different things. This makes the two devices unique in their own way. Operating Mode

You can choose to use the enhancement mode or the depletion mode. Both of them can work when using MOSFETs. On the other hand, JFET can only be operated using the depletion mode. The difference in Input Impedance
When it comes to the measure of opposition to current, both JFET and MOSFET have varying differences. JFET are usually more sensitive to input voltage signals because of their high input impedance. Nonetheless, when it comes to this particular aspect, the MOSFET is considered to have a higher input impedance as compared to the JFET. This makes MOSFET more resistive.

Cost Differences
When it comes to the cost of the two devices, they both have varying prices. In most cases, JFET is usually cheaper than MOSFET. This is because manufacturing JFET is simpler and more affordable as compared to manufacturing MOSFETs. On the other hand, MOSFET is made of a metal oxide layer which is an expensive component that makes it more costly compared to JFET.

Method of Application
Another difference between the two devices is where they can be put to use. Normally, JFET is good for low noise applications. This means that it can be used on electronic switches and buffer amplifiers. On the other hand, MOSFET is usually ideal for high noise applications. MOSFET is perfect for digital and analog signal applications as well as in other systems which are usually rooted.

Resistance to Damage
Finally, this is another factor that can be used to show the difference between JFET and MOSFET. When you look at susceptibility to damage, you will realize that MOSFET is more prone to damage than JFET.
